Last night the moon was a silver quarter pinned on black, silver spun spilling over. As I walked in the dark, wisps of conversations swirled around in the quiet, from all those times we’d sleep on the terrace when kids long long ago, sheets cool to the touch, blanket quickly pulled over head every time one heard a strange rustle in the night.
So I was a finalist for an international translation anthology but didn’t make the final cut. Whatever. It cuts.
Abhinav Bindra, the shooter and Olympic gold medalist, in today’s Mint offers an interesting read, specially that part about being positive as versus realistic.

Loved how you described the evening.. Beautiful, Austy.. Really really!
No, do not allow it to cut you.
Blanket over head...Austy noise or not, cold or not - its always drawn and I am desperately trying to get over this habit.
It is said Edison failed 10000 times before inventing electric light...I know its really easy for me to say, but guess disappointments are always going to be there and all we can do is to keep trying. I wish you the best and I know you will make the cut.
I read the article, was interesting. 9 hours of practice & he has done it since he was 12...wow...i've always wondered if these people would've missed out on their childhood
reading this right after lunch and you've transported me to my childhood. I am feeling damn sleepy too. :-)
and congratulations for being a finalist.
Hi,Austy-great translation-and,worry not-you win some, you lose some-finally,it's all about enjoying what you're doing!:)(Which is why I want to come out of the contracting line....but,need to fix a steady inflow source,first..sigh)
amit- the opportunities are so few for translation, losing means losing out big time. I cannot rationalise this.
arunima- shukriya. sort of. you slept on the terrace back home?
pq- thanks. sheer dedication over a lifetime earns one the gold.
mago- you know what this feels like.
