No, not always, and when people don’t act true to form, the stalwart giving in, the strong man buckling under pressure, the saint turning to crime—that last feather, that X factor--that’s captivating....

I'm talking about writing, about stories. What's the point if everything follows a formula, even stregth?

You really hit the nail on the head here. And a good reminder for when I like a "hero" type so much that I neglect to push them hard enough.
