At the moment I do not share your sense of optimism about the U.S. Looking at America today, or better: at the image of America I get from the media I use here, I think it is a bit dangerous nowadays to link too much with this declining superpower. Politicans all over the world very often forget the major "bonum commune" and act selfish (in a way selfishness is a part of their character, otherwise they would be unable to come into these positions) - but what parts of the socalled "elite" act out over there actually is beyond any description. I pity the President, he obviously thought he'd had to interact with rational humans, not egoistic Neanderthals.

fyi, I am a conservative American, but do not believe (at least I hope not) that I would generally be considered either selfish or Neanderthal. It is so easy to be deceived by the media. I try to read as much as possible, from the left, the right and the ostensible center, to find a semblance of "truth."
